From Anatomical Point Of View Bird Head Stabilizer

Nov 23, 2020

I believe that many people have seen videos shot with a chicken head fixed camera as a stabilizer on YouTube or elsewhere. In fact, the head of many birds, including pigeons, is a stabilizer. Nowadays, the stabilizing devices used in photography are all based on the invention of bird bionics.

Unlike human eyes, because birds’ eyes are on both sides of the head, in order to maintain a stable vision, the bird’s head will remain stable during movement. The principle to achieve this is vestibulo-ocular reflex, that is, the rotation of the head felt by the vestibular organs of the inner ear, and feedback to regulate the movement of the eyeball in the opposite direction. However, the eyeballs of many birds cannot rotate like humans. Birds achieve the same purpose by adjusting and controlling the neck muscles. Therefore, some birds can keep their heads stable during movement.

In fact, the contribution of birds to humans in the field of bionics is very huge. They inspired humans to invent airplanes, zoom lenses, navigators and so on. There are many examples of this kind. Bionics acts as a medium to connect the functions of birds with the needs of humans.
